Forest Management

WORKING GROUP

Chaired by CAL FIRE and the US Forest Service the Forest Management Working Group works together to find cross jurisdictional solutions to improve the health our California’s forests and other natural and working lands through the increased use of prescribed fire and restoration projects, strengthened partnerships with and support for private land owners and in a manner that creates a strong workforce especially in rural communities. The Work Group provides an oversight role for the work groups focused on: private land management, prescribed fire, reforestation, and workforce development.

Treat 500,000 Acres of USFS Land Annually by 2025

Consistent with the Shared Stewardship Agreement, the USFS intends to treat a total of 500,000 acres annually by increasing the pace-and-scale of restoration treatments over the next five years.

Increase Sustainable Timber Harvest Programs

The USFS will seek to increase its annual timber harvest from 400 million board feet (MBF) to 500 MBF annually, accounting for a third of the current industry capacity of 1.5 billion board feet annually.

Expand Agreements

The USFS will seek to expand its use of Good Neighbor Authority and Shared Stewardship Agreements and other mechanisms to partner with state, local and tribal governments to accomplish fuels reduction projects on federal land more efficiently.
